Pioneer Cemeteries of Lucas County

There have been 47 cemeteries started, at one time or another, in Lucas County since we became a state in 1846.  Of these known 47 cemeteries, 21 have now become what are called Pioneer Cemeteries because they have had 12 or fewer burials in the past 50 years.

In 1997, the Lucas County Board of Supervisors, under a law passed in 1996 by state legislators, established a commission made up of nine members to bring these older cemeteries, many of which were totally abandoned, back in a respectable condition.  That was the beginning of the Lucas County Pioneer Preservation Commission.
